On our Terrell Ghost Walk tours, we often talk about different ways we try to connect with the spirit world. One of the most intriguing and sometimes controversial methods is the attempt to capture Electronic Voice Phenomena, or EVP. If you've ever wondered what those faint, disembodied voices you hear on paranormal investigation shows are all about, you've come to the right place!

What Exactly is EVP?

In simple terms, EVP refers to unexplained voices or sounds found on electronic recordings that were not audible at the time of recording. These sounds can range from faint whispers to clearer words and even short phrases. The belief among many paranormal investigators is that these voices may be the communication attempts of spirits or other paranormal entities.

Think about it: we believe ghosts are energy. Perhaps they can manipulate or imprint their voices onto existing electronic noise in a way that our ears can't perceive in real-time, but our recording devices can capture.

How We Attempt to Capture EVP:

On our Terrell Ghost Walk tours (and in our investigations), we sometimes employ different methods to try and capture EVP:

• Digital Voice Recorders: These are the most common tools. We'll often ask questions aloud in a supposedly haunted location and record the silence (or any ambient sounds). Later, we'll carefully review the recordings, listening for any unusual voices that weren't present at the time.
• Spirit Boxes (Again!): As we mentioned in our equipment blog, some believe spirits can also use the white noise generated by a spirit box to form vocalizations in real-time, which can then be recorded.
• Dedicated EVP Microphones: Some specialized microphones are designed to be highly sensitive and pick up a wider range of frequencies.

What Might You Hear?

If we capture EVP during a tour and share it (always with careful consideration!), you might hear a variety of things:

• Whispers: These can be very faint and sometimes difficult to decipher.
• Single Words: Often, these words might seem relevant to the location or a question that was asked.
• Short Phrases: Occasionally, clearer phrases can be captured, which can be quite compelling.
• Unintelligible Sounds: Not every unusual sound is a voice. Sometimes we capture sounds that are simply unidentifiable.

The Importance of Critical Listening:

When reviewing EVP, it's crucial to listen critically and consider all potential explanations. Not every strange sound is a ghostly voice! We always try to analyze our recordings carefully and consider the context in which they were captured.
